What is the purpose of Be Part of Research
Be Part of Research is an initiative designed to connect people with health and care research studies across the UK, making it easier for you to find opportunities to participate in research that aligns with you health conditions or interests. It is run by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) in collaboration with Northamptonshire Integrated Care Board.
How it works
You can search for research studies based on specific health conditions and locations. By signing up for a free account, you can receive notifications about studies that match your interests. The service aims to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to get involved in research that can lead to better health outcomes.
Importance of participation
Participating in research is crucial as it contributes to the development of new treatments and healthcare practices. The initiative emphasises that anyone can take part, regardless of whether they are directly affected by a health condition. This inclusivity helps gather diverse perspectives and experiences, which are vital for comprehensive research.
Participating in health and care research is particularly important for Black and Asian communities because these communities have historically been underrepresented in research, which can lead to gaps in knowledge, unequal quality of care, and treatments that are less effective for them. Many health conditions—such as diabetes, heart disease, mental health disorders, and certain cancers—affect Black and Asian populations differently in terms of risk, symptoms, and outcomes. When people from these communities take part in research, it helps ensure that findings reflect real diversity, leading to more accurate diagnoses, safer treatments, and care that is culturally appropriate and equitable. Greater participation also helps address long-standing health inequalities, builds trust in health services, and ensures that future healthcare policies and interventions are informed by the experiences and needs of Black and Asian individuals and families.

How else can I get involved?
You can also get involved by becoming a Research Champion.
A Research Champion is someone who promotes health and care research from a community’s point of view to patients and the public, and especially those communities who are currently less likely to take part in research. They also help researchers and healthcare staff understand more about the experiences of those who take part in research and the specific systemic barriers faced by those communities underserved in research.
