NHS Free Health Checks: What You Need To Know
If you’re aged 40 to 74 and don’t already have certain long-term health conditions, this check could provide valuable insight into your future health—and practical steps to protect it.
What Is An NHS Health Check?
An NHS Health Check is a routine assessment designed to build a picture of your overall health and identify your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and Type 2 Diabetes.
During your appointment, a healthcare professional will carry out a series of straightforward checks. These typically include measuring your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and body mass index (BMI). You’ll also be asked questions about your lifestyle, including your diet, physical activity levels, alcohol intake, and whether you smoke.
The results are used to calculate your risk of developing cardiovascular disease over the next 10 years. You’ll then be given personalised advice to help you stay healthy, along with support or treatment if needed.
Why Are NHS Health Checks Important?
Many serious health conditions can develop slowly and without obvious symptoms. Issues such as high blood pressure or raised cholesterol often go unnoticed but significantly increase the risk of life-threatening events like heart attacks and strokes.
An NHS Health Check helps spot these early warning signs. Early detection means you have time to take action—whether that’s making small lifestyle changes, accessing support services, or starting medication if appropriate.
By identifying risks early, NHS Health Checks play a key role in preventing conditions linked to Cardiovascular Disease. Even small changes, such as improving your diet, increasing physical activity, or stopping smoking, can make a meaningful difference to your long-term health.
How Can I Get An NHS Health Check?
If you’re eligible, you’ll usually be invited for an NHS Health Check every five years. Invitations are often sent by your GP practice or local council.
If you think you’re eligible but haven’t received an invitation, you don’t need to wait—you can contact your GP practice directly to ask about booking an appointment. In many areas, checks are also available through community pharmacies and local clinics, making it easier to access a convenient appointment.
Booking is typically straightforward and can be done by phone, online, or via your GP reception team.
Healthwatch North Northamptonshire are partnering with local organisations to deliver Free NHS Health Checks. Our next community event is on Saturday 23rd May and you can find out more by clicking here.
