What is an Enter & View?

An Enter & View is a statutory power held by local Healthwatch organisations. It allows authorised representatives to visit health and care settings—including hospitals, GP surgeries and care homes—to observe services, speak with people using them, and hear directly from staff about how care is delivered.

The purpose isn't to inspect or regulate services. Instead, Enter & View visits focus on:

• Listening to people's experiences
• Identifying what's working well
• Highlighting opportunities for improvement
• Making constructive recommendations to help shape future services

By bringing together the voices of residents, families and frontline staff, Enter & View helps ensure services continue to improve in ways that matter to local people.

Our Visit to Thackley Green Specialist Care Centre

Healthwatch North Northamptonshire visited Thackley Green Specialist Care Centre over two days in May 2026 to better understand the experiences of people receiving rehabilitation and intermediate care.

The visit included:

• Structured interviews with six residents
• Structured interviews with nine members of staff
• Discussions with the leadership team
• Observations of the care environment and day-to-day interactions

Thackley Green is North Northamptonshire's specialist rehabilitation and intermediate care centre, supporting people who no longer require acute hospital treatment but need additional rehabilitation before returning home. The visit explored how effectively the service promotes recovery, independence and safe discharge back into the community.

Our Enter & View Team

The Enter & View was led by Claire Neilson, Healthwatch North Northamptonshire Service Manager, alongside five trained Healthwatch volunteers representing a diverse range of ages and backgrounds.

What We Heard

The findings present a highly positive picture of Thackley Green Specialist Care Centre.

Residents consistently praised the compassionate, respectful and person-centred care they received, describing staff as kind, patient and committed to helping them regain confidence and independence. Many spoke about the progress they had made during rehabilitation and how the support they received had increased their confidence about returning home.

Healthwatch representatives observed a calm, welcoming and well-maintained environment where positive interactions between staff and residents were evident throughout the visit. The rehabilitation-focused culture was clear, with staff encouraging residents to rebuild everyday skills rather than creating dependency.

Staff also described a strong culture of multidisciplinary working, highlighting the importance of collaboration between therapists, nursing staff and healthcare professionals to deliver personalised rehabilitation programmes that help residents achieve the best possible outcomes.

Key Themes and Opportunities

Alongside the many strengths identified, the Enter & View highlighted several wider opportunities to improve the rehabilitation pathway.

One of the most significant themes raised by staff related to hospital discharge processes. Staff reported that some residents arrive before they are medically ready to fully engage in rehabilitation, meaning valuable rehabilitation time can be lost while people continue recovering from acute illness. They also highlighted delays outside residents' control—such as housing adaptations or social care arrangements—which can extend stays beyond the funded rehabilitation period.

The report also identified opportunities to:

• strengthen awareness of community support available after discharge
• continue promoting social wellbeing throughout rehabilitation
• build on inclusive and culturally competent care
• maintain the strong focus on rehabilitation and independence that residents value so highly.

These recommendations are intended to build on an already successful service while helping improve experiences across the wider health and social care system.

Looking Ahead

The report recommends a whole-system review of hospital discharge pathways to help ensure people are transferred to rehabilitation services at the right time and receive the support they need to maximise their recovery.

Healthwatch North Northamptonshire will also continue its Enter & View programme by exploring discharge pathways in other services, including Kettering General Hospital and Spinney Hill, helping to build a complete picture of how rehabilitation services work together across North Northamptonshire.

This Enter & View demonstrates the value of listening to both residents and staff. Their experiences show that Thackley Green plays a vital role in helping people regain independence, while also highlighting opportunities to strengthen rehabilitation and discharge pathways across the wider health and care system.
