Falls Prevention Week: Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference
21–25 September
“I don’t want a fall to stop me doing the things I love.”
That’s the message behind this year’s Falls Prevention Week – and it’s an important reminder that a fall doesn’t have to mean giving up the activities, independence and everyday moments that matter to you.
Falls are not an inevitable part of getting older. There are simple steps we can all take to reduce the risk of falling and help us stay strong, steady and independent.
Keep moving and stay strong
Regular physical activity can help improve strength, balance and mobility. This doesn’t have to mean joining a gym. Walking, gardening, dancing, suitable exercises or taking part in a local strength and balance class can all help you stay active.
North Northamptonshire Council provides information about local strength and balance opportunities, including Otago exercise programmes, which are designed to help prevent falls.
Take a look around your home
Small changes around the home can make a real difference. Keeping walkways clear, making sure rooms and stairs are well lit, and taking care with loose rugs, cables and other trip hazards can all help make your home safer.
If you're concerned about managing safely at home, support may be available with equipment, adaptations and practical solutions.
Look after your health
Some health issues, changes in eyesight or hearing, and certain medicines can increase the risk of falling. Regular sight and hearing checks and talking to your pharmacist about your medicines can be useful parts of falls prevention.
And if you have already had a fall, don't be afraid to ask for help. A fall can sometimes be a sign that something needs checking, and getting the right advice can help you remain independent.
Local support is available
If you live in North Northamptonshire and are worried about falling, or have recently experienced a fall, the council's Falls Management Service offers specialist assessment and advice to help reduce your risk.
Adult Social Care can also provide information about a range of support, including falls prevention assessments, occupational therapy, equipment and adaptations, assistive technology and support to remain independent at home.
Need help or advice?
Contact North Northamptonshire Council Adult Social Care on 0300 126 3000, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm.
You can also request an assessment to discuss your care and support needs if you're finding it difficult to look after yourself or live the way you want to.

Don't let the fear of falling stop you
Being worried about falling can sometimes lead people to become less active – but staying active and taking sensible steps to manage your individual risks can help you maintain your confidence and independence.
Falls Prevention Week is a chance to think about what small changes could make a difference to you, a family member, friend or neighbour.
Because staying strong and steady isn't about giving up the things you love – it's about helping you keep doing them.
